Acquisition will Broaden BroadSoft’s Portfolio to Include VoIP and Video Quality of Service (QoS) Solutions

GAITHERSBURG, MD, October 5, 2009 – BroadSoft, Inc., the worldwide leader in VoIP application software for the telecommunications industry, today announced its intent to acquire privately held, Cupertino, California-based Packet Island, Inc., a pioneer of SaaS-based quality of service (QoS) assessment and monitoring tools for VoIP and video networks and services.

The acquisition enables BroadSoft to address the critical need in the market of ensuring QoS, and quality of experience (QoE), for real-time communications. BroadSoft’s expanded solutions portfolio will now enable service providers to offer significantly enhanced QoS assessment and monitoring capabilities of their communication services; allowing service providers to rapidly and cost-effectively deploy VoIP and video services with guaranteed end-to-end “carrier-grade” service delivery.

Packet Island’s lifecycle management solutions enable customers to:

  • Assess networks before deploying VoIP and video services
  • Verify the deployments to establish a baseline
  • Continuously monitor and re-assess the service quality on a periodic basis
  • Provide troubleshooting tools to pinpoint problems in both the LAN and wide area network (WAN)

This approach, coupled with Packet Island’s use of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technology, allows service providers to dramatically reduce support costs and end-customer churn.

“As the recognized worldwide leader of VoIP applications, BroadSoft is committed to helping our global customer base rapidly deploy IP communications services. Packet Island offers a complementary technology that further enables the migration of voice and video to IP by ensuring the highest QoE,” said Michael Tessler, president and CEO of BroadSoft. “This merger will broaden BroadSoft’s range of cloud-based communications offerings, provide revenue growth opportunities, and create long-term value for our service provider customers.”

“Cloud services are now evolving from data only to a converged media environment. With this merger, BroadSoft is well positioned to be the dominant communications infrastructure provider in this new cloud marketplace,” said Praveen Kumar, founder and CEO of Packet Island. “We believe that the Packet Island solutions can offer significant benefits to BroadSoft’s installed base of more than 450 service provider customers. We look forward to joining the BroadSoft team and to contributing to the company’s ongoing growth and success.”

Once the acquisition is complete, all Packet Island employees will be retained and Packet Island founder and CEO Praveen Kumar will become BroadSoft’s PacketSmart Chief Technologist.
